With so many inexpensive flights to North America, the good news is that thousands of condo, apartments, cabins, beach huts, lodges and southern mansions can be rented online. Here are some of the better sites.

With so many inexpensive flights to North America, the good news is that thousands of condo, apartments, cabins, beach huts, lodges and southern mansions can be rented online. Here are some of the better sites.

choice1.com Three-bedroom townhouse near Lake Tahoe, California.
From £660/week.
First Choice lists hundreds of privately owned properties in Florida, Lake Tahoe, Mexico and Hawaii. Resortquest.com is a slick operation that manages around 20,000 properties in the south-west, the western ski resorts and British Columbia. You deal with the website, not the owner, which some might regard as an advantage.

CyberRentals.com/US.htm
One-bedroom riverside cabin with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia.
£499/week.
CyberRentals has over 9,000 properties covering nearly every state. Cabins.com and Mountain Home (mountain-home.com) are good places to look for cabins.

subletinthecity.com
Studio in a brownhouse on the Upper West Side, New York City.
£564/week.
One of the few sites that lets you specify a price range, Sublet In The City is a slick service with plenty of pictures and effusive descriptions. New York Habitat (nyhabitat.com) lists cheaper sublets in Queens and Brooklyn.

greatrentals.com
Four-bedroomed 1840s farmhouse in Weston, Vermont.
From £910/week. The official Vermont state site (vermontvacation.com) is better than most. If you know which state you want to stay in, Great Rentals, Findrentals.com and Vacationhomes.com all have clickable maps.

4BeachNuts.com
Three-bedroomed 18th-century house, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
From £502/week.
Specify how far you want to be from the beach - in this case, a mile from Nantucket Sound. Beachhouse.com lists lots of seaside properties in the Carolinas, California, Hawaii and Massachusetts.

vrbo.com
Studio condo in the French Quarter, New Orleans.
From £377/week. Seems to specialise in offbeat, remote locations - it even lists a cabin in North Dakota for a very reasonable £219 per week.
