· The de luxe way to do it would be to spend the night - with dinner - at the excellent Lochgreen House Hotel near Troon - a short taxi ride from the airport - and take another taxi the following morning the 12 or so miles to Ardrossan. Not cheap, but if you're flying Ryanair, it's a good way of spending what you've saved!

· How about the Seamill hydro by West Kilbride. Not as exclusive as Lochgreen House, but by no means slumming it. It's also much closer to the Arran ferry, only a few miles up the coast. You can watch the ferry leaving Ardrossan harbour from its sea-facing windows.
