Mike Lane wants to take a township tour in Cape Town.

The friendly, knowledgeable local guide from Thuthuka Tours (+ 08297 95831, townshipcrawling@excite.com, R200) introduced us to local people, a traditional healer and a craft fair. You can also visit a school, church or an evening jazz tour at the local shebeens.

· Township Capers offers accompanied half-day tours of Langa for R210pp. You can buy tickets at the tourist office on the V&A Waterfront. You are accompanied on the walking tour by a community worker who lives in Langa and takes you to the various projects without making you feel like an intruder.

· I can highly recommend Grassroute Tours (grassroutetours.co.za). It is sensitively conducted with the full cooperation of township dwellers, who get something out of it. We saw a school, a soup kitchen, I had my first ever beer in a shebeen, and we met a lady who has set up a B&B for tourists in her shanty dwelling. Our guide had some very moving tales to tell of his own experiences.

· Get out to Hout Bay, where a man called Kenny organises tours of the local township. You can get details from the local tourist office. The tour is inspiring: you get the chance to see local small businesses, projects, etc and meet residents of Imizamo Yethu. A half-day tour costs R95, including a traditional meal, R45 without lunch.

· Thabang Titoti runs his own tour business, Izizwe Travel and Tours (+ 021-697 0068, email mwezizwe@mweb.co.za). He offers both scheduled and private tours all over the Cape Peninsula and to the Townships.

· A trip with One City Tours (+ 021-387 5351) was the highlight of our stay in Cape Town.

· African Odyssey (01242 224482, africanodyssey.co.uk) offers half-day Cape Care Route tours of the Cape Town townships. They aim to show how people live in the townships and supporting small, local projects such as bead makers or the District 6 museum. The money people spend on the tour goes directly to the local people involved, not to a large company or to the tour operator. African Odyssey can offer a week's B&B in Cape Town from £995pp including scheduled flights, airport taxes, eight days' group B car hire and a half-day tour.

This week's questions

I want to take a three-month Spanish language course in Cuba but have been told this is not possible as a British citizen. I understand that it is only possible to get a 30-day visa, renewable for a further 30 days, but after this the only way to stay is to leave the country for 24 hours. Is there any way around this?

I am going to the opera in Verona in August. We have reserved seats for Aida in the gradinata numerata section. It says to 'dress appropriately', but what is that exactly? Does it mean black tie?

I am taking the family on holiday to Glencoe in July/ August. Any good tips on how to defend the kids against midges?
