Bedtime reading at Hilton hotels

Guests at Hilton hotels will soon have more to read in their rooms than the Gideon Bible. Citron Press, the 'indie' publisher, is launching a joint initiative with the hotel group to place a complimentary 'book for bedtime' on every pillow. In addition, a selection of Citron titles will be available for sale in the rooms and in the hotel foyers.

The initiative is being tested in Hilton hotels in Islington, Watford, Bristol and Bracknell, where guests will be given a complimentary copy of The Forces In by Citron author Alan David Price.

There will be four other Citron titles in their room. These are cellophane-wrapped and will be added to the guest's bill only if the seal is broken.

It remains to be seen whether The Forces In, taken from The Other Side of the Mirror, will be a popular bedtime read. The title page warns: 'Prepare yourself for a journey into a dark and frightening landscape where vampires refuse to shun the daylight and the Dracula legend is deconstructed to offer a new and terrifying definition of the "living dead".'

If the scheme is successful, the books for bedtime short stories will be available in all 6,000 rooms at all 79 hotels of the Hilton chain in Britain reaching five million guests over the year.

Hilton and Citron also plan to hold a fiction weekend with seminars and lectures featuring Citron writers.

Citron Press was founded to showcase new writers and to provide a challenging choice of fiction which might not otherwise be published. It was the first publisher to use print-on-demand technology to reduce initial costs such as stock and storage charges.
