The new Orient-Express train...
Yes, the fifth. We call it the Orient-Express of the North because departures are usually from Manchester, Liverpool and York although we travel all over the country, from Berwick to Bath. Next year a full tour of England will be available. There are six dining cars which have been refurbished and we have started using one of the royal engines, Prince Henry or Prince William, when they are not being used by the royal family.
What kind of guests do you have?
All sorts, from those who have saved up all year to those who could probably buy the train. It's a unique and relaxing experience, so I often get to know guests quite well. People can take weekend breaks or just have dinner: we frequently have musicians on board and the mood changes when the table lights come on at night; it can be very romantic.
So what do you think should be done about the railways?
The railways are out of my hands! But although we have had a few delays over the last week due to the speed restrictions we have not had any problems before. Since we are a private company we put in our timings to Railtrack and we have to fit in around the scheduled trains. However, it is clear that there are more trains on the tracks now than ever before.
Most memorable experience?
The Northern Belle's inaugural journey last May had everyone from celebrities to Japanese film crews. I spent 17 years on the Venice Simplon Orient-Express and I met many movie stars and producers: George Lucas and Martin Scorsese had a whole carriage to themselves. But I have just returned from Edinburgh where three daughters had organised a birthday party for their mother and she was so happy she was in tears - that is just as special.
And your favourite journey?
The Edinburgh trip is probably my favourite - it's such a great city - and I always enjoy going to Bath. The route from Carlisle via the Settle line goes over the Ribble Head viaduct which is amazing: really wild and windy.
Any murders?
Definitely not.
