A new collection of boutique hotels to rival Malmaison and Hotel du Vin is to be launched in September by Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines.

The first in the group of Abode hotels is the Royal Clarence in Exeter, which Caines bought at the end of last year with business partner Andrew Brownsword. The Art House hotel in Glasgow will become the second, and the pair intend to launch 10 properties in spa and university cities over the next five years. Rooms will cost from £120.

Caines, who already runs restaurants in Bristol and Exeter, intends each hotel's restaurant to be attractions in their own right. They will draw on local sources: for example, in Scotland Aberdeen Angus beef would be used, but in Devon, it would be Ruby Red.
