First impressions: A homely inn nestled in a toy-town village at the end of a road that leads nowhere. A huge log fire greets you as you enter, instantly stripping off months of built-up stress. Style meets tranquility here, gift wrapped in Suffolk's bracing sea air.
What are the rooms like? The 18 ensuite bedrooms, divided between the main house and garden, are bright, comfortable and beautifully decorated. Cream walls and beige carpets provide further stress therapy.
The bed test: Ample, firm mattress with an abundance of fluffy pillows and soft white cotton. Bliss.
The bathroom test: Well stocked with Pure bath products. Effusive shower, and a good-to-wallow-in bath.
The restaurant: The Trinity is the vibrant core of the hotel. Ruth Watson, owner and award-winning cookery writer, has created an eclectic menu based on local fish and free-range food. Dinner - at about £25 a head - includes fat skate wings, cod with chorizo and scallops with Vietnamese sauce.
The bar: Adnams, of course.
What is there to see within walking distance? Henry II's 12th-century castle is remarkably preserved with fine views over the coastline. You can take boat rides from Orford Quay around the local osprey bird sanctuaries. The famous Butley Oysterage is just round the corner.
Within driving distance? This is the heart of Benjamin Britten country. Snape Maltings, home to the Aldeburgh Festival, is a short drive away.
How much a night? From £80 for two, including breakfast. Mid-week packages available.
