As record numbers of British beaches were given the Blue Flag clean beach award this year, Consumers' Association publication Which? picked out 12 of the best. Among those selected were Praa Sands in Cornwall for its craggy cliffs, grassy dunes and gorse-shrouded headland, an ideal beach for budding surfers and nature-lovers. Bournemouth's golden sands were litter-free and a special feature was the kidzone scheme, which reunites straying youngsters with their parents. St Andrews in Scotland boasts West Sands, and provided the dramatic backdrop for scenes from Chariots of Fire.

All of the 12 beaches recommended met the EU guideline standard for water quality. Safety was also a key consideration and most of the beaches selected have lifeguard cover or patrols in high season.
