If you haven't booked your summer holiday yet and are put off going abroad by last weekend's horrendous airport delays, don't despair: the foot and mouth outbreak has meant there are still some great deals around if you want to holiday at home.

Unsurprisingly, some of the best offers are in areas which have been worst affected by foot and mouth - Devon, Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. While some cottage operators and hoteliers are offering discounts of up to 20 per cent on peak season prices, others have introduced deals such as three nights for the price of two.

David Hanmer, director of Devon self-catering specialist Toad Hall Cottages, says there are still many cottages available in peak season.

'It is unprecedented for some of our most attractive family-size properties to have weeks free in July and August,' he said.

And don't think that most of the British countryside is closed to visitors. More public rights of way are reopening all the time, and the majority of tourist attractions are open for business.

Devon

About half of Devon's public rights of way are now open. Hopes were dashed of reopening the northern part of Dartmoor National Park last weekend after a sheep tested positive for foot and mouth. The situation will be reviewed on 14 July. However, southern Dartmoor (basically anything south of the B3212) is open, apart from the area around Two Bridges. Coastal areas such as the English Riviera and resorts such as Ilfracombe on the north coast are riding the storm.

Toad Hall Cottages (08700 777345) has properties available on Dartmoor. Oldsbrim Shippon, an ancient Devon longhouse, is available throughout August for £790 a week. The stone wall cottage, sleeping six, has massive oak beams and has been restored to a high standard. It is ideally situated for walking, riding and canoeing on the River Dart.

Classic Cottages (01326 555 555) is offering a week's holiday at the Westcott Cottage near the village of Chagford for £616 from 28 July. The village has four pubs and an open-air swimming pool and is an ideal base for walks to Kes Tor, Meldon Hill or the National Trust's Castle Drogo. The cottage sleeps four and has a cot for the baby.

Cumbria

'You'd have to drop an atomic bomb on the Lake District in July and August to stop people holidaying here,' is how Ian Stephens, operations director of the Cumbria Tourist Board, describes demand for the peak holiday season. Around 60 per cent of the Fells are open to walkers and the majority of tourist attractions such as Windermere Lake Cruises are open. But there are still pockets of availability as the foot and mouth outbreak has put off many holidaymakers from booking breaks this summer.

Sunvil Holidays (020 8232 9788) is offering a three-night break at the Nanny Brow Country House Hotel on the northern end of Lake Windermere from £225 per person including breakfast and a five-course dinner this summer. The hotel sits in five acres of gardens and woodlands with spectacular views of the River Brathay.

Stay in a Grade II listed former stable near Morecambe Bay for £542 per week between 21 July and 1 September with Hoseasons Country Cottages (01502 501515). Double Door Cottage sleeps up to four people and is 17 miles from Lake Windermere and Lake Coniston.

Premier Cottages Direct (01228 670615) is offering a 20 per cent discount at the Tottergill Farm cottages at Castle Carrock in Cumbria during July. Prices now range from £260 to £545 per week for the properties which sleep from two to eight people. Three-night breaks range from £175 to £360. Local attractions include Ullswater in the Lake District, Carlisle's castles, museums and shops and the newborn Shetland pony/zebra cross foal at Eden Ostrich World near Penrith.

Save 10 per cent off the normal rates with upmarket cottage agency Rural Retreats (01386 701177) until 6 September. Properties include Barugh Cottage which sleeps six people and is located on a working hill farm overlooking the River Lune near Orton. A three-night break now starts at £450 while a week-long holiday costs £822.

Scotland

Walking may be a no-goer in this Scottish region but there are still plenty of other things you can do. More than 46 footpaths have reopened in Dumfires and Galloway but the vast majority of public rights of way are still closed. You can still go mountain biking in Mabie Forest or try out the watersports at Loch Ken.

Save up to 20 per cent on the five-star Knockinaam Lodge (01776 810471) in Portpatrick during July and enjoy a free half-bottle of champagne on arrival. A member of Pride of Britain Hotels, the 10-room small country house property has a Michelin-starred restaurant and is set in 30 acres of garden with a private beach overlooking the Irish Sea. A two-night break in July starts at £192 per person sharing a standard room with dinner, bed and breakfast.

The Cromlix House hotel near Dunblane in Perthshire (01786 822125) is offering £55 savings on two-night stays throughout July and August. Guests now pay £260 for two nights with dinner, bed and breakfast at the hotel which is set in a 2,000-acre estate. Local attractions include boat trips on Loch Katrine, Stirling Castle and whisky distilleries.

The Loch Rannoch Hotel in the Perthshire Higlands is offering an extra night free when you stay for two nights. Prices start at £52.50 a night, book through Macdonald Hotels (08457 585593).
