Walking itineraries are still a refreshingly uncommercial aspect of the web, with plenty of walkers happy to share their experiences and recommendations online.
South East National Trails
The Countryside Agency has produced detailed guides to the Ridgeway, the Thames Path and the North and South Downs Way for walkers, cyclists and riders. Impressive detail and extensive bus and train information make it an unexpectedly good free resource.
MAFF Conservation Walks
A minimal, curiously old-fashioned site that lists walks in countryside managed under environmental schemes. All are open to the public and slightly blurred black-and-white sketches of the area are provided, along with the length, OS references, the best time of year to visit and a brief summary of the walk's attractions. Photographs and more lyrical descriptions are sadly lacking.
Ramblers Association
The Ramblers' Association, which campaigns to open up more of the countryside to walkers, sells numerous guides via this site. A few leaflets are available free of charge on topics such as footpath erosion and general advice. For more, you'll have to join (£20).
John Dawson's Lake District Walks
Descriptions of nearly 50 walks around the Lakes. Photographs are on separate pages, which means you can download a page relatively quickly and print it out on a single sheet to take with you.
Britain - Long Distance Paths
A useful collection of links to individual walks, many of them supplied by county councils.
Itineraries for Independent Travel
This site says it will soon have itineraries for walks in the UK. Currently, it offers two apparently comprehensive versions for trips to the US. They cost around £22 each.
Coast 2 Coast accommodation and services guide
Notable for its links to local accommodation and lively walkers' forums, Coast 2 Coast is part of a network of six regional sites covering Offa's Dyke, the Cotswolds, Cleveland, Dales and Pennine Ways intended to promote local businesses in each area.
Walking World
Submit a walk of your own here (with photographs) and you receive a year's free subscription. Currently, all the walks here are free to access, but ultimately they won't be. Get in now and write the first walk for a particular region: Walking World pays £40 for them.
Walk Northumberland
Thirteen walks in the north-east are described by a devoted local resident.
