London's hotels, theatres and restaurants are offering special deals and added extras in a bid to bring visitors back to the capital. By reducing prices, providing shuttle buses to attractions and adding free excursions, they hope to recover from the effects of last month's terrorist attacks.
'It's a perfect time to come into the capital,' said Mark Maddock, global hotels director of www.lastminute.com. 'August is traditionally a quiet month for hotels because there is less corporate business, but the rates are now even lower.'
Hotel booking website www.wotif.com is offering three nights at the four-star Danubius Regents Park for just £140, compared with the usual rack rate of £199 per night, while a double room at the four-star Grosvenor Kensington, where the rack rate is £175, is available for £59 per night with breakfast.
Justin Manning, sales director for the Westminster Hotel in Notting Hill and Burns Hotel in Kensington, said the hotels are now offering free shuttle buses to major tourist sites and a free riverboat cruise for bookings of two nights or more in August. Room prices are now around £65 for a twin or double, compared with the usual August price of more than £100.
With less crowding and smaller queues, it is also easier to get around. At Madame Tussauds, where queues can reach up to two hours, waiting time is currently only up to 30 minutes, according to a spokesman.
Lastminute.com's head of theatre and restaurants, Mark Bower, said many theatres are now offering discounts on Friday night shows instead of just Monday to Thursdays, and are running Q&A evenings with big name stars. 'We've already done one with David Schwimmer and Val Kilmer, and next we're doing Sienna Miller,' he said. 'Theatre and restaurant deals that cost £22.50 before are now going for £19.95.'
