If travelling to the spectacular Monument Valley in Arizona, note that:
1 The Reservation, including the nearest town Kayenta, is officially "dry" so you will have to take alcohol with you if you want a drink.
<strong 2 Don't be put off by Kayenta. It is a rather sad little mess but Monument Valley is wonderful.
3 There are two main choices for jeep tours. Leaving Kayenta, you will come to two exits, one to the left to Goulding's Lodge, the other to the right towards the Valley itself. Take the latter and hire a jeep there - at least the money goes straight to local people (who call themselves Dineh, not Navajo), many of whom resent the expansion of the Goulding's.

When searching for flights on the net, it is quicker and easier to use the travel industry flight codes. A full list can be viewed at airport citycodes.com. For example, LHR is London Heathrow, LGW London Gatwick, LTN Luton, LCY London City Airport, LON any London Airport (including Luton), STN London Stansted, JFK JFK Airport New York, EWR Newark, LGA La Guardia, and all above are NYC (ie New York City). The LON to NYC can be a very quick search facility, and encompasses 18 possible combinations in one hit.

Roly Smith (Headlands and heartlands, September 22) mentions the "two-car trick" for achieving a longish linear walk without backtracking. My solution uses only one car but two drivers. You drive your car to the furthest point (B), drop off the passenger, return to A and lock the door. Both start walking in opposite directions. Remember to hand over the key at the mid point, preferably in a pub, or have a key each if there is a danger of passing in the mist. Your friend picks up the car and collects you from point B.

Before flying, separate your things into two and pack half in your luggage and half in that of your travel companion. If like us you have a case that doesn't arrive, you still have clothes to wear.
