What can I do here?
Very little. Last year, I mentioned deckchair.com and received an earful on Monday morning from a frustrated reader. Still, founder Sir Bob Geldof relaunched it last week, so I gave it another try. According to the PR puff, Deckchair now has a bigger choice of flights and links to 140,000 hand-picked websites.
What went wrong?
First of all, Sir Bob told me to register before I could search for anything. He took my email address and didn't bother to tell me whether he'd send junk mail. Undaunted, I searched for a flight to Moscow. Five minutes later, Deckchair was scouring the database. Goa? Ten minutes later, it was still plodding away. Amsterdam? As for a hotel in Rome, the top suggestion was in Honduras.
Surely the links were worth a look?
Surfing in Cornwall and trekking in Nepal were easy to research, but sailing around the Greek islands, health advice for Oman and obtaining a Russian visa all drew a blank. In other words, Altavista is likely to be more effective.
Were there any redeeming features?
Deckchair takes four traveller types - girls, blokes, culture vultures and weekenders - and suggests activities in NY, Barcelona, Prague and Paris.
This site is for...
Former rock stars thinking about launching an internet start-up. It's sagging. It's on the verge of collapse. Throw the deckchair away and start again, Sir Bob.
