Meat-free Paris

The fastest run

The world's fastest inter-capital rail service is the Thalys-run link between Paris and Brussels, covering the 312km in 1hr 25mins. Thalys is a joint venture between the French, Belgian, Dutch and German railways. Rail Europe Direct 08705 848848.

Tinsel to go

Some 32% of Britons travelling abroad for Christmas say they will pack tinsel and a Christmas stocking, according to a Thomas Cook survey. More than half of those questioned say they will eat a traditional turkey dinner, while 89% say they will phone home on December 25. An estimated 290,000 will go abroad.
