Cash without frontiers

Ros Taylor finds the sites that will help you ensure a healthy cash flow abroad

Universal Currency Converter
There are plenty of currency converters on the web, but not all of them offer 180 currencies. The UCC enables conversions from the Ecuadorean sucre to the Kazakhstani tenge (as well as the euro) and rates are updated every minute.

Travel on Demand
Many countries impose restrictions on the amount of foreign or local currency that visitors can import and export. (In the case of Russia, you cannot order roubles in advance of the trip, nor take them home with you.) This site details all such restrictions.

American Express International ATM Locator
Those who have ensured their Amex card is affiliated to the Express Cash programme can use this site to find out which cashpoints will accept it. Rather than displaying a list, customers need to look for, say, the Bank of Guam logo on an ATM. Some of the logos are displayed, and printing them out for your purse or wallet might prove useful.

International ATM Locator
Another site that promises much but fails to deliver, the Barclays ATM finder lists each country, but clicking on them elicited no response. It is, however, possible to compare the cost of using a Barclays Connect card in Greece, France, Italy, Spain and the US.

Chequepoint
An initially flashy site that proves cumbersome to use. To arrange a money transfer, for example, visitors fill in an online form. Chequepoint then sends a quotation and Bank Transfer Form by e-mail, which you fill in, print out, sign and deliver or fax to your bank. Delivery only takes place once your bank has approved the transaction. It's difficult to estimate just how long all this might take, but it's unlikely to be much use if you're stranded penniless in the Far East. This is online ordering for its own sake, and not worth the hassle involved.

Thomas Cook Currency
A hefty handling fee of £5 (but no commission) and fairly competitive exchange rates make this an efficient way of ordering currency and traveller's cheques, which are then delivered by post.
