Website of the week

Cheapnights.com

Cheapnights.com? I though you covered that last week.

No, that was www.cheapaccommodation.com.. This is a spin-off from the surprisingly popular Cheapflights.com, which lists - but does not sell - dozens of airfares for hundreds of destinations.

Is their new site any different?

Not really. It brings together links to sites that do sell accommodation, but there's no guarantee that they will have rooms available on a particular night or at especially low prices. However, because of the lack of good online hotel-booking services, Cheapnights is still a valuable resource: a search for Venice, a difficult place to find inexpensive rooms, returned several dozen possibilities offered by a number of different companies.

What about, say, Addis Ababa?

Two: the Sheraton and the Hilton. Neither was exactly cheap, but you'd hardly expect small Ethiopian boarding houses to provide online booking facilities.

What else should I know?

The links for each destination are unusually good - a mixture of commercial and informative sites. Visitors can post recommendations and requests at the forum (at www.cheapnights.com/forum) - although, oddly, given that the site has only just launched, some of the postings are more than two years old. You should also bear in mind that local taxes are not usually included in the prices initially quoted.

Do hotel brokers pay to appear on the site?

Yes. So the listings are in no sense comprehensive. "This ensures that our partners keep their prices and information up to date," explains Cheapnights.com.
