· Since the demise of the Go's cheap flights to Reykjavik in 2001, the only alternative has been to fly with Icelandair, but cheap (approx. £150 return) flights are again available from Stansted to Reykjavik with Iceland Express (www.icelandexpress.com). There are several buses each day from Reykjavik to Selfoss (nat.is/english.html), with the journey taking about an hour. Youth Hostel accommodation (www.hostel.is) in Iceland is good value. There is a remote hostel at Fljitsdalur that's built in the traditional Icelandic style, with turf walls. Accommodation in Selfoss can be found at www.gesthus.is. The Youth Hostel at Reykjavik is very good, and there is one close to the airport at Njarvik. The buses from the airport to Reykjavik will drop passengers off at the Youth Hostel on request.

· In answer to the question about booking a trip to Iceland to see the eclipse: Contact Arctic Experience on 01737 214214 or www.arctic-experience.co.uk. They can arrange flights, accomodation, car hire etc. to suit any budget - but remember that Iceland is not an inexpensive country.

· The best place in Britain to observe the eclipse will be the Shetland Islands. Only 702 miles from Iceland, Shetland is perfectly placed to view the eclipse - and offers a cheap alternative than travelling much farther afield. Reachable in just over an hour's flight from Edinburgh, or a couple of hours' flying time from London, it is an accessible destination. Shop around for good prices, which start from £174.50 from Edinburgh or £138.10 from London. Accommodation information is available from Shetland Islands Tourism (01595 69 34 34; www.visitshetland.com ). Alternatively, packages are available through cruise-style ships operator NorthLink Ferries, www.northlinkferries.co.uk .
