This year, we're trying mountain walking. What kit should we be packing?

For those who take their rambling seriously, this year's accessory is a pair of Brasher Supalite Compact trekking poles.

Trekking poles? Another fad?

No. Apparently they ease the strain on your legs and lower joints. It is claimed that a single pole can take a third of the weight off your hips, knees and ankles.

And how do they differ from other models on the market?

They are more compact when closed: at just 55cm, they will fit into a small suitcase, thereby avoiding trouble at airport check-ins. Each pole is just under 2cm thick and a pair weighs 500g.

Just expensive sticks then?

These three-part telescopic poles are made from tough yet lightweight aluminium alloy and have tungsten carbide tips "for extra durability and grip".

How much?

They cost £55 a pair from The Brasher Boot Co (call 0191 516 5777 for nearest stockists).
