Workers in Northern Ireland will get two days more annual holiday than has been promised for the rest of the UK under plans by Peter Hain to extend statutory holiday entitlement from 20 to 30 days. The Northern Ireland secretary has defied Downing Street, which wanted him to abide by an agreement with the unions committing the government to 28 days statutory holiday. Jeffrey Donaldson, a Democratic Unionist MP, accused Mr Hain yesterday of forcing through measures to boost his appeal with Labour members, who will vote this year on whether to elect him deputy leader.
