Open House (Openhouse.org.uk) is the two-day London event (Sept 16-17) when more than 600 buildings normally closed to the public open their doors to visitors.
1. Blizard Building
Queen Mary College's Institute of Cell & Molecular Science is a new landmark building providing innovative research laboratory facilities.

2. BedZED
Urban eco-village with 100 homes and 10 workspaces, designed to be carbon neutral in use and to reduce residents' energy and water usage. Roofs with photovoltaic panels are topped with distinctive cowls that circulate air.

HQ of the Wellcome Trust. Vast open-plan design around light-filled atrium featuring spectacular artwork.

4. The Ismaili Centre
Meeting place for cultural, educational, religious and social activities. From the serenity of the entrance fountain to the remarkable roof garden, it draws on Islamic traditions in architecture and design while remaining conscious of its context.

5. Bank of England
Soane's 18th-century creation was internally rebuilt in the 1920s, but Soanian remnants include screen walls and a 1988 recreation of his Bank Stock Office.
