First impressions: Tastefully weathered inn, built in the local stone of this Yorkshire market town. A warm welcome from the staff reassures you that you're in good hands and a tour of the hotel's airy restaurant, heated outdoor pool and comfy lounges bodes well for a seriously relaxed weekend.
What are the rooms like? Our standard room was amply proportioned, comfortably appointed and easy on the eye. All rooms get a sexy Bang & Olufsen TV, CD and DVD combo, with the option to pipe sound into the bathroom.
The bed test: Sumptuous Egyptian cotton with plump duck-down pillows and duvet. Like kipping on cumulus. Blissful.
The bathroom: Simply designed, ours was fine for a quick wash and brush-up rather than a languid linger.
The restaurant: Grand, conservatory-style eating area gives meals a real sense of occasion. Staff strike a perfect balance of the professional and the affable. Menu focuses on local produce: our delicious Whitby crab starter tasted sea fresh, my lamb main course was beautifully tender. Set three-course menu £30. Very tempting wine list. The fabulous full cooked breakfast can be served in your room for no extra cost.
The bar: Comfort and informality reign, with lounging encouraged by well upholstered, sympathetically chosen furnishings, but enough bar space to occupy if you so desire.
What is there to do nearby? Spend a relaxed day in Helmsley, taking in the broodingly ruined castle, walled garden and market square. A half-hour drive gets you to Whitby or York. Or take a hike in the local hills.
How much? From £130 for a double room B&B .
