Plenty of fishing information is available on the net, but it is not always of the highest quality - and much valuable bandwidth is taken up with colourful pictures of fishermen showing off the size of their catch.
I apologise for the use of the term "fisherman" throughout these reviews; the truth is that I did not find a single fisherwoman on any of these sites. Any contradictory evidence would be welcome.
Angling in Iceland
Brief but alluring prose and pictures that celebrate the "pollution-free" Atlantic and river salmon fishing in Iceland. Exporting the fish can sometimes be difficult, but parts of Iceland offer a special taxidermy service for visiting fishermen.
GORP
"Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota, there live a lot of trout just waiting to be caught." Leave your scruples about declining fish stocks behind and think about a fishing holiday in the States, where the fish are fat, plentiful and willing. GORP is a vast and well-presented resource of advice and tips, with a strong regional guide and lively writing.
World Wide Fishing
Featuring the longest pull-down menus I've ever encountered on a website, World Wide Fishing may be sorely in need of a search engine but it does list a vast number of holiday resorts all over the world for freshwater, saltwater and fly fishing. Don't be deceived. Most of the "individual" pages are in fact almost identical, and the reports on each resort are rather sparse.
Norwegian Salmon Fishing
Norgold is a Lancashire company which organises stays on the River Namsen in central Norway. Dates and prices are unfortunately absent, but the accommodation and fishing both appear to be very impressive.
Fishing in Scotland database
A small but useful site with good contacts for fishermen visiting Scotland and a searchable list of holiday companies.
Fishing.co.uk
This already impressive site is due to relaunch in the autumn, and is currently searching for fishermen who would be willing to pose naked for a "Grab Your Tackle" calendar to celebrate the occasion. Women are not invited to apply, but might be welcome, too.
The rest of the site is comprehensive and entertaining, with special sections on fishing holidays and accommodation - although it is unclear whether the companies featured have paid to be on the site or are simply there because Fishing.co.uk endorses them.
