First impressions Middle market. Located in a swanky area but the place itself is not overly plush. The reception area looks like the secretary's office at a decent comprehensive.

What are the rooms like? Delightful. Very spacious and tastefully decorated. Decent air conditioning would help for the rare flashes of British summer, but otherwise there is a very helpful side room if the whirring fan gets too much.

The bed test Big enough, comfy enough.

The bathroom test Nothing glamorous, everything functioning. The Marks & Spencer of bathrooms.

The restaurant Understated. An identical number of notches up from Blackpool B&B as it is down from Claridge's.

The lounge Full of people and papers and chat - exactly as it should be.

What is there to see within walking distance? Most of central London, particularly Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road.

What is there to see within a 10-minute drive? All of central London, although central London being what it is you'd be better walking.

How much a night? Small doubles £120; double/ twin £150; suite £195.

Would you go back? Yes, if I lived out of town and was feeling flush.
