First impressions: Don't say that Grade I listed house, with beautiful grounds and golf club and boating lake and a starring role in Bridget Jones's Diary (the hotel where the dastardly Hugh Grant takes our windswept Bridget on a mini-break) could possibly be where we're staying?
What are the rooms like? Staggeringly gorgeous. Oak-timbered four-posters very likely slept in by Queen Elizabeth I, who owned the place; sofas; lots of cushions; big windows with luscious view.
The bed test A great night's sleep had by all; especially good if you draw the curtains on the four-poster.
The bathroom test: Under-floor heating, glamorously-overflowing bath, twin sinks. And some very, very nice towels.
The restaurant: Impeccable food (especially the chocolate fondant) and the most charming waiter ever (particularly good if you want gossip from the Bridget Jones set). Side-by-side seating was slightly odd.
The lounge: Very relaxing, more cushions.
What is there to see within walking distance? Just the grounds: golf, tennis, the lake.
What is there to see within a 10-minute drive? The bourgeois quartet of Windsor, Eton, Henley and Ascot are terribly near. Otherwise, there's Slough.
How much a night? Doubles from £245 a night. Two-night Bridget Jones package (champagne, breakfast, dinner, BJ goodies) £235pp.
