First impressions: An impressive country pad set in over 10 acres of Surrey countryside. The original house was built in the 1880s for a wealthy family to escape from London and it now serves as a country retreat - but with all mod-cons. Inside, the oak panelling, oil paintings and grand staircase meander up to rooms containing enormous plasma screens.

What are the rooms like? Ours was split level and large, with high ceilings and views over the grounds. The 42-inch TVs are the focal point; DVDs can be borrowed from reception - remote controls are the size of palmtop computers and take some getting used to.

The bed test: A four-poster, traditional feel with firm mattress and blankets galore.

The bathroom: TV sound levels can be controlled while you soak in the sizeable bath with Molton Brown goodies.

The restaurant: Formal dining in the Oak room where three-course dinner costs around £35. Traditional ingredients have been spiced up to create an interesting menu: crab samosas and herb-crusted John Dory on squid-ink risotto are offered alongside roasted rack of Welsh lamb and poached Victoria plums.

The bar: Canapes and drinks are served in the Grand Hall, where guests can relax on velvet sofas and talk in hushed whispers.

What is there to do nearby? Hampton Court Palace, Chessington and Thorpe Park are all under 10 miles away and, for racing fans, Epsom, Sandown and Kempton Park.

How much a night? Until the end of August, B&B £70pp, DB&B £90pp per night for two sharing staying a minimum of two nights.
