Interview by Carl Wilkinson

Me and my travels

My favourite hotel is Leopard Hills Game Reserve in South Africa. The staff are fantastic, really efficient and friendly.

My idea of paradise would be ...

To play the Portmarnock links in Ireland in the morning, have lunch at The Cottage Inn in Maidens Green, near Ascot, catch a 30-pound salmon on my beloved Tyne in the afternoon, and have dinner at The Waterside Inn in Bray.

My favourite hotel is ...

Leopard Hills Game Reserve in South Africa. The staff are fantastic, really efficient and friendly. It's great to stay in a place where no one bothers you apart from the leopard that sleeps on your roof. That happened last time we were there, earlier this year. I'm planning to go out again in October after the walk I'm doing around the UK.

I can't get enough ...

Good wine. I have a wine collection of about 800 bottles from around the world. Some of the pinots out of Central Otago in New Zealand are stunning. I also have my own range called Botham Merrill Willis wines. We are now proud producers of an award-winning cabernet sauvignon. It's great to be able to say, 'that's our wine!'.

My most memorable meal was in ...

Cambio De Tercio on Old Brompton Road, London for my birthday last year. It has been voted best Spanish restaurant outside of Spain. I love the oxtail and I would recommend the vintage wines starting from 1964.

The most romantic place I've ever been ...

A houseboat on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. I went there between Test matches while touring with England in 1996. My wife Kath and I have friends out there and they introduced us to the houseboat. We had to negotiate our way past 20-foot crocodiles, but it was worth it for one of the best sunsets I have ever seen.

My last trip was to ...

My house in Desert Springs in Almeria, Spain. I love it as it has superb views of the mountains around, and it's the only desert golf course in Europe.

My first trip was ...

To Cornwall with my parents. I was only a toddler and it was the first time I had ever seen the sea. People underestimate how beautiful some of the UK's beaches are and beach cricket is an excellent way to introduce kids to the sport.

My top travel tip is ...

On long-haul flights adjust your body clock on the plane. Set your watch to the time it will be at your destination. It's bog-standard advice, but it really works.

When I'm travelling I miss ...

Home. I miss Kath and messing around with my dogs, Pinot and Merlot, and being able to slob out around the house in my shorts and T-shirt.
