When I saw your Netjetters advert it was like the light at the end of a tunnel, an escape.

I'm a civil servant working in the press office of a major government department with my soul slowly being eaten away. I spend my day rushing to obey the every whim of assorted politicians and dealing with journalists asking silly questions (not from the Guardian of course - they are always a delight to talk to). I'm tired of defending some minister for going on a factfinding visit to a far off country when the most travel I get is on the Northern Line. I want to see the world too.

Mind you, I'm not very adept at travelling. The longest I have been away is a few weeks in Europe just before university. My photos from that summer remind me of hot, tiring journeys, noise, confusion and living off cheese baguettes. But despite the lack of sleep, the hunger and the ground-opening teenage embarrassment that comes from having a group of Spanish girls giggling at your accent, I thought it was great. I loved arriving in a new place by train and stepping out in the early morning light to explore. I loved how everything was different and strange; how simple things like ordering a coffee would turn into a frenzy of arm-waving and arguments. And I loved talking to new people who always seemed pleased to meet me and keen to show me their country - apart from that ticket collector in Rome who was very rude.

Where would I go? I'd go to Africa to live in a treehouse above roaring lions and ponderous elephants. I'd go to Vietnam to travel down a slow, wide river in a small boat surrounded by chattering rainforests. I'd go to the Middle East to be woken up by the call to prayer echoing across the city. I'd go to the Andes to snowboard on glaciers. I'd go to North America to travel by train through mountains and by lakes. I'd go to all these places but I know the most fun would come in the places I never planned to be in.

And you say I get to tell everyone what a great time I'm having? Well, I would try to inspire everyone who is stuck in a job which frustrates them but that they cannot see a way out of. I would show them the amazing places they could be.

I had enough trouble getting around Europe in six weeks so I can't imagine why I want to go round the world in six months. I know it would be wonderful and awful, exciting and dull and I know it would change me completely. So please pick me.

I'm not too sure how I will get on without my civil service umbrella - but then I've heard it doesn't rain so much abroad.

Lots of love

Sam
