Interview by Maia Adams

Where I’d rather be

Svein Berge, Röyksopp

What are you working on right now?

In addition to our own third album, my partner Torbjörn and I have just finished putting together an album for the Back To Mine series of compilation CDs. So right now, the promo activities and interviews are keeping us pretty busy. The album is a selection of tracks that are very personal to us - anything from Talking Heads and Art of Noise to Funkadelic and Super Max - so limiting ourselves to just a handful of tunes out of the hundreds that we love was almost painful. In the spirit of things we invited some friends over, spent a night in the studio and - inspired by the after-party vibe - we made our selections. Some tracks on the CD will be familiar, others are quite obscure, but they are all reflective of our own music and inspirations. We're pretty pleased with the result - it should get people dancing.

Where would you rather be?

Tokyo.

What's so special about it?

Torbjörn and I are from a little fishing town in northern Norway so we're still in awe of this futuristic city. I love the fact that the Japanese have sampled American and European pop culture and made it their own and now they're exporting it back to us in ways that are funnier and cooler. Playing at the Fuji Festival under mount Fuji is pretty special too.

What would you do there?

Visit the Harajuku and Shibuya districts to see the crazy fashions the kids wear down there. They're so dedicated to their appearance - some of them look like superheroes. I'd also indulge my love of music at a keyboard shop called FiveG where they sell and repair analog keyboards. I can spend days at a time in there.

Where would you stay?

The Capitol Tokyu Hotel in Chiyoda-ku (tcvb.or.jp). Every time we stay, the staff remind us that the Beatles stayed there before us.

Who would you take with you?

I'd take my two little daughters to a huge toy shop called Kiddie Land. We could all enjoy the blinking, bleeping toys.

What's the one place you'd like to see before you die?

The earth from space, so that I could cry like they do in the movies. Or Egypt to see the Pyramids.
