Been there photo competition May 2008

May's photo competition was given a New York theme, and with an avalanche of entries to sort through, making a shortlist was a difficult task. But we got there eventually - here's our pick of the top entries.

Ice skaters in Central Park — Jessica Walker: "I spent an hour skating in an unexpectedly snowy Central Park and was astonished at the peacefulness of the setting even though I was so close to the bustle of 5th Avenue. I loved the contrast of the frivolity of the skaters on the ice rink set against the solumn austerity of the city. It reminded me of a setting for a Lowry painting." Guardian assistant picture editor Helen Healy says: "It's a ghostly photograph of one of the world's most familiar skylines. I like the desolation of the Hoboken shore, scene of On The Waterfront.
