Been there photo competition May 2008

May's photo competition was given a New York theme, and with an avalanche of entries to sort through, making a shortlist was a difficult task. But we got there eventually - here's our pick of the top entries.

Ice skaters in Central Park
Jessica Walker: "I spent an hour skating in an unexpectedly snowy Central Park and was astonished at the peacefulness of the setting even though I was so close to the bustle of 5th Avenue. I loved the contrast of the frivolity of the skaters on the ice rink set against the solumn austerity of the city. It reminded me of a setting for a Lowry painting." Passengers at Grand Central Station
Ton Fijten: "The crowd parted and left the man with his travel bag, isolated and framed by the arch. For me the picture represent NY, it is a grand city, cathedral-like with all the skyscrapers, full of people, who are often just staying for a short while or just passing through, anonymously." New York, as seen from Hoboken
The winning photo, by Mike Thornborrow: "The city on a misty morning, taken from the other side of the Hudson river in Hoboken."

Guardian assistant picture editor Helen Healy says: "It's a ghostly photograph of one of the world's most familiar skylines. I like the desolation of the Hoboken shore, scene of On The Waterfront. It reminds us of the enduring allure of Manhattan on the other side of the Hudson from this down-at-heel New Jersey city."
