Nicola Cornwell: This was taken on Mayreau, St Vincent and the Grenadines. The island is tiny: 600 inhabitants and one road. The church at the top of the hill has stunning views of Tobago Cays. On the way up to take some shots there I saw these children wandering around a graveyard. They spent at least 10 minutes at this grave. I loved the poignancy of the moment. Barry O'Neill: This is a shot taken at a subway station in Japan, where a guy was saying goodbye to his girlfriend. The seemed to be leaving each other for a long time by the expression on their faces. It was shot on Illford HP5 film at 135mm with an old Minolta SRT102. Photograph: Barry O'Neill

Chris Eley: The photo is of a couple of members of the San Bushmen tribe from the Kalahari desert, Botswana. It was taken in the late afternoon and the light was perfect. The whole tribe were very welcoming, and they were incredibly photogenic. The expression on the woman's face as she greets the baby struck me straight away and it is this that makes the photo for me. Sarah Ames: When walking through a deserted Hanoi airport I saw this figure watching the aeroplanes arrive and depart. Photograph: Sarah Ames

Katrina Struthers: Sadly saying my goodbyes on my last day in Rwanda, I was overwhelmed by the children running down the hill after me shouting, 'Bye bye... Bye bye!' Turning around one last time to wave, I took my final photo. A shutter speed of 1/80 and a large aperture (5.6) captured a sense of hurried movement among the frozen smiles of the two young boys. Paul Hough: A lone woman stands motionless as the last tube of the evening arrives on to the platform in central London. Fortunately she remained still, giving a nice contrast with the flux of the speeding tube. Photograph: Paul Hough

Chris Wright: This photo is taken on the Freedom Bridge, near the border of North and South Korea. People put pictures and ribbons up in memory of those who have died as a consequence of conflict between the north and the south, or of family members who are still alive but they are separated from because of the border. It is both a hello – in the hope that in some cases they will be reunited – and a goodbye, remembering people they may never see again. In this case, the picture is of a person who is holding a picture of a person – a goodbye within a goodbye, tacked to the fence with a thousand others. Photograph: Chris Wright

George Turnbull, runner-up: I was in a field with woman workers cutting sugar cane, at Inle Lake in Burma, when suddenly a lorry sped past with sugar-cane workers finished for the day. For a split second they recognised a stranger in the field and smiled while one waved ‘hello/goodbye’ as they passed swiftly on their way. I like the sharpness of the moving truck and the surprised reaction of the women with their traditional and prominent make-up.

Judge Natalie Meyer: A great shot with perfect focus on the people and bamboo as they speed by. The blurred trees and bushes frame the image well. A slightly closer crop would've benefited. A good shot well done, but not quite enough to be the winner.'

Slawek Kozdras, runner-up: The photo was taken this month, during the Thames Festival in London. I was trying to capture the sense of joy kids (and adults) had chasing soap bubbles. Every time the man released the bubbles everyone would rush forward with their arms spread out and a huge grin, as if they were meeting an old friend. The fact that the light was special didn’t hurt the photo. Neither did the shadow of the London Eye on the Shell Building.

Judge Natalie Mayer: After your eye travels around the image exploring what is happening, it focuses on the shear joy of the girl being lifted. Hello bubbles, goodbye bubbles! Shame the sky was so was so grey that day. A little more clarity or interesting sky to the right of the image would have made it for me.

Donald Bane, winner: I took this photo having been totally engaged by the smile on the sculpture. Whenever I look at this picture I feel like a small child being warmly greeted by someone who is very pleased to see me. It was taken at Cottesloe Beach, Perth, Western Australia.
Natalie Meyer, judge: 'What fantastic full contrasting colours captured here! I love the simplicity and the large figure makes such a great impact. Capturing the moment the girl glimpses up in amazement as she's whisked by – great timing and great interpretation of this week's theme. Remember to straighten the horizon next time.'
