BT 2012 gallery winners: A hoatzin bird in the Los Llanos region of Venezuela
Matthew Fleet, February winner – the theme was nature: A hoatzin bird peering through the trees in the Los Llanos region of Venezuela. It's also known as the 'stinkbird' due to its rather strong odour – but luckily we were far enough away for this not to bother us.

Natalie Mayer, judge: February's theme of nature generated some wonderful entries. This one stood out as a winner for its clever use of and understanding of light. The bird just has its head peeping into a shaft of light, and has been cleverly and precisely captured through the leaves and branches. Any movement up or down (of which I'm sure there was much) could have hidden his head either in shadow or behind foliage, and that kind of precision deserves recognition. The shallow depth of field serves to emphasise perfectly the subject, and the exposure is spot on – not easy with so much light and shade to fool the camera's light meter. Fine work.

BT 2012 gallery winners: Paris on the edge of the River Seine
Faye Maher, April winner – street life: Young and old enjoying the 'romance' of Paris on the edge of the River Seine.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This one really stands out for me. Great compositions, wonderful subjects all with super body language and all interesting in their own right. I think this shot would work great in black and white, but either way it's a lovely scene, well spotted and captured.

BT 2012 gallery winners: fish markets in Brixham and Plymouth, south Devon
Ollie Jarman, May winner – water: This image is part of a series capturing the essence and importance of the fishing industry in Britain. Shot over a period of time spent at fish markets in Brixham and Plymouth, south Devon, the water cascading over the floor creates this surreal watercolour look.

Natalie Mayer, judge: Gorgeous oily rich colours, and lovely, faultless composition. This one appears splendidly simple – which good photography should. Lovely entry, well done!

BT 2012 gallery winners: Race Across America 2011
Cath Brazier, June winner – journeys: I was part of the support crew for a team of four cyclists taking part in the Race Across America 2011. Reputed to be the world's toughest cycle race, competitors travel more than 3,000 miles from the US west coast to the east in less than a week – it's quite a journey! This photo was taken in the state of Kansas and it was the first time for about 24 hours that we had seen anything other than flat land. I love the bleak remoteness of the location juxtaposed with the action and colour of the cyclists and their support team.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a beautiful image, strikingly composed. The light is great, and it has an expression and energy from both the cyclists and spectators. The inclusion of the hastily exited car with the open door gives the image a sense of a spontaneity and the perspective of the mountains suggests great distances are going to be travelled.

BT 2012 gallery winners: lizard
Alessandra Bossio, July winner – colour: This shot was taken in the garden of my casa particular, in the town of Trinidad, Cuba. This lizard seemed to be interested in the movements of my hands as I served coffee and set up breakfast.

Natalie Mayer, judge:
What gorgeous simplicity and colour contrast. Just stunning!

BT 2012 gallery winners: pub in Penzance, Cornwall
Jacob Cockle, August winner – culture: This was taken in a small pub in Penzance, Cornwall. I feel it sums up a lot of the weekend culture of the booze Britain generation.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This one is a clear August winner for me. I love everything that it so unselfconsciously captures. There are so many fun and interesting things going on – the spilling pint glass, the nonchalant photographer, the blow up shark fight, the cute girl, the cheeky mate. A good capture of a culture lots of us have felt part of at some time or other.

BT 2012 gallery winners: surfers' carnival at Coolum Beach, Queensland
Andrew Sole, September winner – sport: The flag race is part of the surfers' carnival at Coolum Beach, Queensland. Competitors have to run and grab the plastic flags.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a classic image, well captured. A real sporting moment in time. It's nice to have the expressions of the three players all so clear and visible. Compositionally it's a tiny shame that the foot on the left is cropped – cropping tightly to the right of the shot would lessen the impact of this though.

BT 2012 gallery winners: monsoon approaches, schoolchildren in Kochi, Kerala
Jamie Furlong, October winner – weather: As monsoon approaches, schoolchildren in Kochi, Kerala, prepare for another season of heavy rainfall. It is not uncommon for roads to remain permanently flooded throughout the summer, but the young students delight in splashing through the warm puddles as they make their way to school.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a splendid image. Lovely composition, very graphic and striking. Beautifully rendered in black and white. There is stunning movement and feeling in this image. A very well deserved winner; I would like to see more from this photographer.

BT 2012 gallery winners: Chichicastenango, Guatemala
Sarah Hammond, November winner – markets: In the busy market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, we stumbled upon a quiet balcony overlooking it and spent a happy half hour watching all the hustle and bustle from a distance. I love all the activity in this photo and spot something new every time I look at it.

Natalie Mayer, judge: Gorgeous colours and composition here. I can almost smell the herbs and feel the atmosphere and hubbub of the market. I love the lady reading her paper just below centre left. This image makes me want to travel, which is what travel photography is all about. A slight crop from the relatively empty top left and bottom right corners are the only things that could improve this image.

BT gallery Dec: Chocolate at Notting Hill carnival
Chris Mole, December winner – food: This is the Chocolate Nation procession at London's Notting Hill carnival, showing the vibrancy and fun of the 'biggest chocolate mass band' in town.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a lively and energetic image. It's a bit grim, seeing those brown teeth so close up, but what the hell, the picture captures fun and life and is well composed and exposed. Out of all the images this month, this one really captures a moment and shows us a fun and interesting slice of life.

BT 2012 gallery winners: supertanker had been washed on to the reef off Sumatra, Indonesia
Jacob Cockle, overall winner and March winner – adventure: A supertanker had been washed on to the reef off Sumatra, Indonesia. We noticed a backwash being created by waves rebounding as they crashed into the tanker. My surfer friend Seb only caught two waves. It was extremely dangerous as the waves were unpredictable and there was lots of twisted metal under the water.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This scene has the elements of great action adventure photography. It's also an image that will stand the test of time and be interesting to look back on in years to come. Importantly, the timing of your capture is spot on and of course the trick super stylish – give a big high five to your surfer friend as this image just would not have worked with shoddy action, as I'm sure you know. Have a great time in Antarctica, it will be great to see what you come back with.
