Bulgaria

The Festival of Roses is celebrated with folk songs and dances at Kazanl and Karlovo on the first Sunday in June. During the first week of June, the Golden Orpheus International Pop Song Festival is held at Sunny Beach. Croatia

Zagreb rolls to Spring Time Jazz Fever from March 21 to April 4 and International Days of Jazz in mid-October. In July, it hosts its Summer Festival showcasing classical works by Croatian composers. July and August also see Dubrovnik's Summer Festival, again featuring the country's classical music stars, and a festival of acapella vocal music in Omis. Croatian Tourist Board

Czech Republic

The Prazske jaro (Prague Spring) International Music Festival takes place in April and May, the Mozart Festival and the Dvorak Autumn Music Festival in September and a New Music festival in October. Finland

The Pori Jazz Festival in July is the more trendy, but the Savonlinna Opera Festival, held at the medieval Olavinnlinna Castle, is the more famous. Finnish Tourist Board

Hungary

Hungary's major celebration is the Budapest Spring Festival (March), a two-week local and international cultural extravaganza. Hungarian tourist office

Latvia

The Baltika Annual International Folklore Festival, which has taken place in each Baltic capital in turn since 1987, is due in Riga this year. It is a week-long affair of music, dance, exhibitions and parades usually held in mid-July. The International Festival of Organ Music is held in the capital in June; the Opera Music Festival in Sigulda; and the Festival of Ancient Music at Bauska Castle in July. Latvian Tourist Board

Lithuania

The most emotive cultural event is the National Song Festival, held every five years (in Vilnius this year). More than 100,000 people are expected to sing along with several hundred choirs from the Baltic region. April's International Jazz Festival attracts top international musicians to Kaunas. July sees a week-long Summer Music Festival of street theatre, dancing, masked parades and craft fairs in the Old Town of Vilnius. Lithuanian Tourist Board

Poland

For classical events, check out Lancut's Old Music Festival in May, Warsaw's Mozart Festival in June and July and Wroclaw's Wratislavia Cantans oratorio and cantata festival in September. The Warsaw Autumn International Festival takes place in September, featuring contemporary music; the Warsaw Summer Jazz Days festival in June; and the Jazz Jamboree festival (again in Warsaw) in late October. Romania

The three-day Bucharest carnival takes place in June. July sees Brasov's Golden Stag international pop music festival and the International Chamber Music Festival concerts in Brasov and Bran.
