Holiday encounters of the snowy kind?

Holiday encounters of the snowy kind?

Originally. An upmarket chalet operator in 1985 decided that hotels in both ski and summer resorts with dedicated child-care programmes were a winning combination.

Haven't Club Med and Mark Warner been there?

No. They run their own resorts. Powder Byrne import their own staff and merge into existing hotels for the season.

Good ones?

Four- and five-star properties clinging to beauty spots around the Med.

Where, exactly?

France, Greece, Italy, Majorca, Portugal and Sardinia.

Child-friendly properties?

Not especially. Powder Byrne provides that aspect. Porto Elounda in north-east Crete, for example, is a parental nightmare of steps, balconies, and superb views over several hundred feet.

But I'd love it?

A grown-up holiday in a luxurious hotel with the children is quite unique.

A dumping ground for parents?

An opportunity for them to chill or rather roast out for five or so hours a day.

What's to do?

There are eight different types of bars at Villa Vita Parc in the Algrave. The ruins of Minoan Knossos is an hour's drive from Porto Elounda. And an indoor complex at La Fregate in Province is ideal for off-season short-breakers.

Are the clubs for all the hotel guests?

No. Only Powder Byrne clients use the clubs. Hence the intimacy between club staff and children.

Will they be busy?

Non-stop. The programme of week's activities, whether sporty, musical or nautical, will be in your room on arrival.

How much would I have to pay for a daily date with a good book?

From £1,142 per adult (£1,032 per child) for one week half-board high season with scheduled flight, and they will tailor-make to suite.

Can I still book this year?

Certainly, contact PB on 020-8246 5320 www.powderbyrne.com, although next winter's ski hotels in the Alps are selling fast.
