Balloon breaks

Is it just a lot of hot air?

To drift away for a day can be out of this world.

Not literally, I hope.

No, your balloon operator will bring you safely, bar the odd bounce, down to earth.

I'm not at my best first thing in the morning.

Most cruises take off just after dawn or just before dusk.

How long do flights last?

An hour or two, plus the pick-up back to the launch site.

Is there a site near me?

Hunt through the 370 listed in the Balloon Directory, available free from the British Balloon and Airship Club on 01604 870025.

Can I bring a friend?

From eight to 19 with Virgin Balloon Flights (01952 200270). Or give them a flight as a gift.

How?

Most companies operate a voucher scheme. One voucher, from £135 with Virgin, includes full insurance, traditional champagne toast, one hour's flight and a personalised commemorative flight certificate.

Top price?

A Fiesta voucher for £286 buys a flight at one of the UK's Balloon Fiestas. Choose from Southampton on July 1 and 2 or Bristol August 11-13.

Up, up and away?

Flying between 500ft and 1,500ft.

Is it quiet up there?

Apart from the intermittent roars from the propane gas jets, it's silent and serene. With no feeling of movement and no cold breezes as you drift.

Can we steer?

Not too accurately. You travel only where the wind carries you.

What if that wind stiffens?

Flights don't depart unless the weather is stable, winds light and visibility clear.

The sky's the limit?

From hundreds of sites around the UK, including the Lake District, the Cotswolds, Devon and the Wye Valley.

No cities?

Several have sites. A London flight with Red Letter Days (0870 4447000), for example, costs £185 for one, £349 for two.

Is it for anyone?

You must be over 4ft 6ins, or the experience will be over your head.

You're sure the balloon won't burst on me?

Just remember - when you reach cloud nine, you're only just beginning.
