Pakistan extras
Pakistan International Airlines has launched twice weekly flights from Birmingham - a Sunday flight to Islamabad and Karachi and a Thursday flight to Karachi via Lahore. The airline is also now operating nine return flights a week into Manchester, with five of these carrying on to New York.

Action stations
The first national rail guide to taking your bike on trains has been published, with copies distributed to every rail station in the country. Sponsored by Brompton Bicycle, it lists the arrangements of all 25 rail operators

Upgrade option
An upgrade, offering more leg room, roomier seats, better in-flight service and priority check-in, is being launched by First Choice on Air 2000. Costing from £29 - £49 per person, the Premium service will operate to 24 destinations from Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol and Stansted.

Barcelona on top
Barcelona is now the most popular short-break destination, according to Inghams Eurobreaks. Its top 10: Barcelona, Paris, Prague, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Dubline, Amsterdam, Bruges, Florence.

Sea safety first
A worrying lack of beach safety among parents in Britain has been revealed in a MORI survey from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It has re-launched its Sea Smart, national sea safety campaign. Ransome note
An exhibition celebrating the life of author Arthur Ransome, called "Swallows and Amazons Forever" has been launched at the Museum of Lakeland Life, Abbot Hall, Kendal. (01539 722464).

Horses on the hoof
A new 90-mile walking trail linking all eight of Wiltshire's hillside chalk horses has opened to the public. The White Horse Trail pack, costing £6, is available from the Wiltshire Walking and Cycling Hotline (01980 623255)

Golf safari
An eight-day golfing safari in South Africa, hosted by Ian Woosnam and travelling on a luxury train, is being run in September. Prices lead in at £11,500 per golfer and £3,200 for non-golfers. Bushsports (020-8780 5906)
