Uluru and Alice Springs are great places. While you are in The Alice, a really good place to visit is the Strehlow Centre, lots of interesting cultural information and art, but not widely advertised.

Hi Milly - I feel I know you already as I work with Sue Stubbings, your fellow netjetter. We are really going to miss her over the next six months and I am so jealous of all three of you. Uluru and Alice Springs are great places. While you are in The Alice, a really good place to visit is the Strehlow Centre, lots of interesting cultural information and art but, when I was there, not widely advertised. Take some time if you can to spend a night in the outback - camping under the stars is the most fantastic experience. Cairns is a great party town with some really good markets (good place for your international wardrobe!). If you haven't tried scuba diving before, it's worth a go, but there are so many barrier reef operators - choose carefully. It can look like Dunkirk at about 5pm with all the Reef trips making their way back into port. The Daintree Rainforest is a must, I had the most wonderful day up there and wished I could have stayed for longer. The beaches in Cairns are pretty non-existent, mostly mud flats, but go just a few miles further north to places like Palm Cove and you are in a tropical paradise. Have the most fantastic time - I am sure you will.
