First impressions: Cosy, classic-looking country inn with rooms above. In the summer it is covered with virginia creeper. Stone-flagged main bar, with real fire, used by locals and visitors. Run by the Stockton family for generations and they have friendly, low-key, good service down to a tee. Well-kept beer including Flowers IPA. Companions said the Guinness was in good nick too.
What are the rooms like? Straight, unfussy, with everything you need, including en-suite, TV, radio-clock. They would not win any design awards but that misses the point.
The bed test: No problems.
The bathroom test: Again, just what you would expect. Shower in bath, but no non-stick mat, lots of hot water, shampoo.
The restaurant: Really, really great pub food, especially the specials at the weekend. Mostly local Wye Valley produce and/or fresh from market. Particularly good was the local beef, lamb, stew and the fillet of John Dory etc . Good puds and simple wine-list. You can eat in the bar.
The lounge: Not much used. Comfy.
What is there to see within walking distance? The Wye Valley, fabulous walking, fishing.
What is there to see within a 20-minute drive? More of the Wye Valley, the Brecon Beacons, gorgeous countryside, Hay on Wye with all its bookshops and Builth Wells. Lots of country things going on - this is unashamed hunting country.
How much a night? Singles from £45, doubles from £35 per person. Sun-Thurs dinner, bed and breakfast (min two nights) from £50pp.
Would you go back? Like a shot.
