William Hague

...finds his namesake at the heart of Europe in the Hague

William Hague/The Hague

Famous for:
William Hague: Baby-faced, pint-downing Tory leader.
The Hague (Holland): Holland's political capital. Famous for its notoriously tolerant attitude towards - well - everything, and having the world's biggest harbour.

The Hague's attractions:
Visit the Municipal Museum (Haags Gemeentemuseum) which devotes a section to early-19th-century Dutch romantic paintings, and gives considerable space to the work of the Hague Impressionist School.

What to say about the Hague:
"I never saw a city where the well-to-do classes seemed to have given the whole place so much of their own air of wealth, finished cleanliness and comfort." - Matthew Arnold

What to say about William Hague:
"You lead the least successful, most hopeless opposition in more than half a century. My job is not to cheer you up." - Andrew Rawnsley

A good traveller?
"William Hague and his Tories - like undiscriminating British tourists dazzled by Disneyland - have returned from their frequent trips to America bearing suitcases loaded with Republican policies." - Andrew Rawnsley.

Election omen?
A liberal-minded city full of liberal-minded people? Maybe it's Charles rather than Tony that William should be keeping his eye on...
