• You don't have to travel too far for a Crusoe-esque holiday. It is possible to book a cottage for a week or two on your "own" island inside the National Park of the Kornati Archipelago/Croatia, which you only have to share with wild sheep. From the 125 islands of this National Park, only one is permanently inhabited. There are a couple of local agencies offering this kind of accomodation. British Airways and Croatia Airlines offer services from Gatwick to Zagreb and Split and then further on to Zadar, or alternatively with a train or bus to Sibenik. • If you want to try a real desert island experience, you could spend a couple of days on the original Crusoe islands themselves: the Juan Fernandez Islands, off the coast of Chile. These tiny islands were once home to Alexander Selkirk (on whom Defoe based his novel) and still maintain much of their deserted feel. They can be reached by charter flights from Santiago and are definitely the place to go if you really want to get away from it all!
