Parkland Hotel, St Andrews.

So if Ardent Productions - or anyone else - fancies a bit of Prince William-spotting in St Andrews, where should they stay? The Parkland hotel is a few minutes' walk from St Salvator's College, where William is studying. You shouldn't go just to royal watch, though - St Andrews has loads of other attractions.

Like what? Well, there are the half a dozen or so golf courses for which the town is famous. Some of the world-renowned golfers who play there have stayed at the hotel, including Spain's Sergio Garcia. But St Andrews is also a quaint historical town on the coast with spectacular ruins of a cathedral and castle. The hotel's in a castle too - the nineteenth-century turreted Kinburn Castle named after a fort on the Ottoman frontier.

What's the hotel like inside? It has only six bedrooms, and service by kilted staff is friendly and relaxed. Room Five is a charismatic turret with sloping eaves, while number four has an enormous bathroom. There's a cosy bar on the ground floor and an impressive stained-glass window next to the staircase.

Any other tips? If you fancy a wee dram, the hotel has strategically placed decanters of port, whisky and brandy around for guests to help themselves - free.

How do I get there? Take the overnight sleeper with Scotrail (0845 755 0033) from London Euston to Leuchars, Fife, from £139 return. St Andrews is a few miles away, and the hotel can arrange free taxi transfers. Rooms cost £150 a night, large family room for four or suite is £200. Prices include a full Scottish breakfast (01334 473 620)
