Black arts
The lives of Britain's African-Caribbean people, in church, dancehall, barber's shop and at home, are depicted in paintings by Barbara Walker in a new exhibition opening as part of Birmingham's Black Arts festival today.

Salsa on Thames

Pulling pints
Watch heavy-horse teams compete in speed, agility and weight pulling tests. More than 30 working horses take part at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in West Sussex. Horse-drawn vehicles include brewers' drays and a bus.

From field to table
Winchester will see the "biggest farmers' market in the country" tomorrow, with more than 80 local producers setting up stalls. It is part of the Hampshire Food Festival, which includes tastings and other events across the county.

Forty years on
Coventry Cathedral celebrates the 40th anniversary of its consecration this weekend. Today, there will be bands, basketball and a barbecue in the ruins of its predecessor, which was destroyed by second world war bombs. Tonight, a concert with performers includes a German cello ensemble. Tomorrow there are special services.

Donovan's eye
Photographs by the late Terence Donovan, recording changes in London from the 1950s to the 1990s, are on show in an exhibition called The Eye that Never Sleeps, opening today in Sheffield.

High culture in Galloway
