Life imitating art

· Choose the area you would like to see and book a flight to the nearest large international airport. Expedia, ebookers, Airline Network would be good for finding a cheap flight. Pick up a rental car at the airport and drive to the area you fancy. In my experience, it is best to reserve your car from the UK using one of the companies that offers packages for overseas tourists (which includes all insurances and taxes), such as Alamo or Holiday Autos. There would be a number of accommodation options. Most small towns have motels. Best Western has some 2,500 motels, many in small towns and all independently owned and often not 'chain-like'. It publishes a free guide and/or you can book and browse on their website (Best Western). Bed & breakfast accommodation in the USA is excellent. Slightly more 'upmarket' than here, but still good value and you get to know the people. Try B&B Finder or Charming Country Inns. Another option could be a home exchange. I've never done this but it would seem an ideal way to experience 'small town' life. Homelink is one such organisation, but there are several others. Whatever you try you will have a great time. The people are relaxed and friendly and genuinely seem to like the British.
