Welsh beaches clean up

Wales is the hot spot for clean beaches in Britain.

Wales is the hot spot for clean beaches in Britain. More than 100 of the 332 British beaches awarded yellow and blue flags for cleanliness in this year's Seaside Awards scheme run by the environmental charity, Encams, are in the principality.

The south-east of England has the most new beaches on the list while Scotland has three new entries. But the survey found that the north of England struggles to meet standards for water quality.

There are two elements to the awards: beaches must meet minimum European standards for water cleanliness; and they must also pass strict tests on first-aid facilities, access for disabled visitors and litter.

There are seven new entries to the Welsh list this year (including the return of Prestatyn, Rhyl and Llandudno).

Folkestone and Eastbourne are among the seven new entries in the south-east of England, taking the total to 49. The English Riviera is the most concentrated area for good beaches: 12 stretches of coast in Torbay won awards.
