The norm appeared to be to book a table in a restaurant for a fantastic meal and free wine all night, along with Cava and the traditional 12 grapes at midnight. On the walk to our restaurant (Taxidermiste on the Placa Real off the Ramblas) we tried to get into some other bars, but if you don't have a reservation/ticket there is no chance.

I'd advise spending one of your fist days there doing a long and lazy bar/restaurant crawl (the hardship), and have a read of the menus and prices on offer. When you find the one that appeals, book quick to avoid dissapointment.
