It’s the Newfoundland for skiers

Best known for its whalewatching, icebergs and as the setting for The Shipping News, Newfoundland is an unlikely new entry on the international ski scene this winter. Tour operator Barwell Leisure (0870 049 3071; barwell.co.uk) has added the resort of Humber Valley in Canada's most easterly province. The resort is nestled in the Appalachian range and is 10 minutes from Marble Mountain, which peaks at 1,700ft, with 34 groomed trails suitable for all levels.

For cross country skiing, Blow Me Down Ski Park and Pasadena Nordic Ski Park are nearby. Combine wintersports activities with whale, bear, and iceberg-watching.

Barwell Leisure has a seven-night ski package from £595 per adult and £495 per child based on four sharing a luxury chalet in the Humber Valley Resort, including return flights from Gatwick.
