Granny's house
Among the things most likely to spoil the Christmas holidays, being cooped up for hours in a car crammed with kids and parcels ranks pretty high. Which is why, last year, I Had A Good Idea. Why not banish the idea of it being a journey completely, and replace it with the idea of having a day out that starts in London and ends at Granny and Grandad's house in Yorkshire?
My husband, as usual, was sceptical: would we want to stop mid-journey, he asked - and would we have long enough in a place to make it worth the entrance fee? The answer, as it turned out, was yes and yes again: the children found it far easier to cope with two three-hour journeys, separated by a three-hour break, than they do with the usual six-hour schlep. What's more, by travelling at the very beginning and very end of the day, we avoided the heaviest traffic. If you'd like to try this cunning ploy, here are some of the best places within a stone's throw of the main routes.
