Lone business travellers often turn into solo weekenders, according to a survey by internet travel site Travelocity.co.uk, which reveals that 68% of short-haul business trips are extended into a personal stay, often with a flight to a different location. "We have seen a clear increase in seats from 'typical' business destinations to break locations," says a Travelocity spokesperson.

In Europe, we're likely to ditch cities such as Milan or Madrid once the work's done and head for the likes of Rome or Florence and Malaga or Barcelona. Miami is the most popular add-on to New York, with Las Vegas hot on its heels. Apparently we're becoming more adept at factoring in "me time", and 38% admitted they're happy not even inviting friends or family but using the time to relax alone.
