The way we see it, the Open Studios event next weekend in York is nothing less than authorised snooping. The concept is for local artists to showcase work in the environment in which it was created. But the most enticing prospect is that most of the artists' studios are in their own homes. Artist Mark Hearld's house is chocker with eccentric paraphernalia, including a collection of stuffed animals and various floor-to-ceiling collages. Note to visitors: once the event is over, loitering reverts to plain trespassing.
