See the best entries and winning photo to Been there's May photo competition, which took the theme By the Water

Loch Tay in Scotland
Christopher Walker: 'The photo was taken while on a family holiday to Loch Tay in Scotland. It's what's left of an old pier out on to the loch. The poor light forced me to use a tripod to capture the image and the long exposure gave a glassy effect to the water' Photograph: Christopher Walker/guardian.co.uk
Beachy Head, Sussex

Vang Vieng, Laos
Andy Pickford: 'This photo was taken in Vang Vieng, Laos. As the sun sets over the karsts, a local restaurant owner is washing lettuces in the river ready for the evening's service' Photograph: Andy Pickford/guardian.co.uk
Harbin, China
Chris West: 'This was taken on the frozen Songhua River in the far north-east of China. For most of the winter, the river is covered by over a metre of solid ice, and tourists and locals flock here for skating, horse-riding and simply walking on the ice' Photograph: Chris West/guardian.co.uk
Doc Let, Vietnam
Benjamin Arthur: 'A magically simple moment when a dog and a girl stopped together on the beach at Doc Let in Vietnam' Photograph: Benjamin Arthur/guardian.co.uk
Burano Island, near Venice
Chris Bladon: 'This image was taken from the lagoon front in Burano Island, near Venice. The island is famed for its brightly coloured houses and lace making, but for me the greatest attraction is the lagoon front which was all but deserted on this cold January morning. Speedboats sailed back and forth creating the beautiful ripples in the water' Photograph: Chris Bladon/guardian.co.uk
Boracay, The Philippines
Ed Sharp: 'Boracay, the Philippines: Getting a tow from another boat through the strong currents provided the perfect photo opportunity with the sunset in the background' Photograph: Ed Sharp/guardian.co.uk
Istanbul, by the Bosporus
Guy Carpenter: 'Istanbul, by the Bosphorus: Local children diving into the waters as freighters offshore wait their turn to travel through the straits to the Black Sea' Photograph: Guy Carpenter/guardian.co.uk
Paradise Bay, Antarctica

Santa Agnes, Ibiza
George Hotham: 'Santa Agnes, Ibiza: Sitting on the cliff top hoping for a spectacular sunset, I was not disappointed as the menacing clouds allowed dappled sunlight to spotlight this yacht and the Mediterranean' Photograph: George Hotham/guardian.co.uk
Honfleur in Normandy, France
Kim Laidlaw: 'I took this photo in Honfleur in Normandy, France. My boyfriend had just taken a photo of me in front of the port, and I found it rather charming that this man was taking a photo of his wife by the water too - like a little glimpse into the future, perhaps. I especially like her faux-nonchalant pose, gazing into the distance' Photograph: Kim Laidlaw/guardian.co.uk
Vancouver
Kevin McGarry: 'I was in the park and saw this guy running towards me with Vancouver's skyline reflected in the water' Photograph: Kevin McGarry/guardian.co.uk
Halong Bay, Vietnam
Michael Cooper: 'Halong Bay, Vietnam: This village floats among the misty limestone islets of the bay' Photograph: Michael Cooper/guardian.co.uk
Salen on the Sound of Mull, on the Isle of Mull, Scotland
Michael Cooper: 'Salen, on the Isle of Mull, Scotland: These fishing boats have been left to rot on the shoreline but have kept their bright colours' Photograph: Michael Cooper/guardian.co.uk
Fjærlandfjord, Western Norway
Marie Peyre: 'Fjærlandfjord, Western Norway: Water lurks around every bend in the road in the fjords of western Norway, with the sea reaching hundreds of kilometres inland, often carving its way between steep mountain sides. I took this picture by Fjærlandfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord, on a rather cold, grey afternoon in summer last year. Somehow it still managed to be beautiful' Photograph: Marie Peyre/guardian.co.uk
Glen Orchy, on the South Island of New Zealand
Michael Cooper: 'Glenorchy, on the South Island of New Zealand: This photo was taken in the late afternoon when the light brought out the colour of the mountains and water. After a long drive, my wife decided to stretch her legs on the pier' Photograph: Michael Cooper/guardian.co.uk
Split harbour, Croatia
Matt Field: 'We were walking along the cliffs next to Split harbour, Croatia, when we came across a group of teenage boys diving from 30-40 feet up. One of them saw us talking photos, and shouted that he was going to show us something special. The boat coming into shot in the distance made it perfect' Photograph: Matt Field/guardian.co.uk
Pen Y Fan, Wales
Simon Brandon: 'Walking down Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, earlier this year I spotted this beautifully tinted reflection of the sky in a small puddle. My friend Ben suggested I take his picture, too' Photograph: Simon Brandon/guardian.co.uk
Frinton-on-Sea
Benjamin Arthur: 'Two ladies gossip on a bench in Frinton-on-Sea' Photograph: Benjamin Arthur /guardian.co.uk
Juhu Beach, Mumbai, India
The winning picture by Tom Spender: 'Juhu Beach, Mumbai, India. The beach was full of people at dusk just hanging out, including quite a few paddling in the water. It was just a great scene'

Our judge, Nicky Rojas, on Guardian's picture desk says: 'This is an excellent composition using twilight and silhouettes to give a laid back social atmosphere. The inclusion of the sandals balances the picture nicely and enhances the relaxed feeling and sense of community. It's exactly what I imagine a typical evening by the water in Mumbai to be like'
