How many holidays are available?
It's impossible to say. Virgin itself attempts to be an impartial source of information, and refers visitors to the OTC (Online Travel Company), QXL.com, placestostay.com and the ubiquitous lastminute.com to make bookings. (Don't go to the Travel Shop section unless you want insurance). These usually offer exclusive discounts on certain holidays. Oddly, Virgin makes no attempt to promote its own holidays, airline or train company online.
Is it easy to navigate?
Reasonably easy, but the site seems a bit piecemeal at the moment; the commercial element seems to have been tacked on to the rest in an arbitrary fashion.
How much background information is available?
Reams of data - not just weather and Virgin's own travel guides, but the OAG gazetteers, which give an impartial view of resorts and were previously only available to travel agents. They cover major tourist destinations and readers are invited to add their own opinions.
How do I book?
If you want to book a Virgin holiday, visit www.virginholidays.co.uk, which has packages to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and various city breaks that can be reserved online. If you want to investigate the special deals with OTC and the other partners, Virgin Net redirects you there.
This site is for...
Anyone looking for a package holiday; read the resort reviews before you buy. Business travellers looking for a reliable hotel in a particular city. Don't come here for the travel writing, which is perfunctory - think of the site as a stolid but reliable encyclopaedia.
